As the largest elements of the ITER project come up for procurement, so UK consortia are being formed to respond to the challenges identified by Fusion 4 Energy (F4E). The ITER Magnet consortium has recently submitted its Expression of Interest and is well placed to respond to an eventual call for tender.
Reaction Engines wins Euro 1 million contract with ESA
SABRE engine model
Culham Innovation Centre-based Reaction Engines Ltd (REL) has been awarded a Euro 1 million contract by the European Space Agency (ESA) to demonstrate the core technologies for the SABRE air-breathing rocket engine that will eventually power the SKYLON spaceplane. The company will build on its knowledge acquired through UKAEA's technical support package to develop the engine's pre-cooler.
The Fusion and Industry team is planning a series of 'Industry Surgeries' here at the Culham Science Centre in Oxfordshire. These will be themed, informal “open house” meetings where companies can meet with members of the Fusion and Industry team and other Culham staff.
ITER site preparation for building construction to begin
At the beginning of February, Industrial Liaison Officers (ILOs) from the fusion programmes in many European countries met with F4E in Barcelona for a briefing on the Work Programme for 2009. In addition to procurements for the large, critical path components, details of design and R&D projects were announced.

Dr Carlo Damiani is Fusion For Energy’s Remote Handling Group Leader in the ITER Department - Machine Systems Division. He is responsible for defining strategies and pursuing the implementation of the European in-kind-contribution to the ITER Remote Handling system.
