Detail of upgraded JET vacuum vessel
|
An 18-month shutdown of the JET tokamak, which is the flagship of the European fusion programme and is exploited under the European Fusion Development Agreement, has just been completed and the machine is being prepared for the restart of experiments later this year. The upgraded JET features an ‘ITER-like’ inner wall of beryllium and tungsten, an improved neutral beam system with an extra 10MW of heating power, and new diagnostics for measuring fusion experiments. UK firms played an important part in the enhancement project, accounting for around one-third of the procurement.
