Ray Chegwin and Hannah Carter from the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) recently exhibited at Culham to discuss the benefits that NPL’s measurement expertise can offer to industry and research institutes. NPL were able to make good contacts with many attendees, enquiries ranged across topics such as pressure, neutron metrology, calibration services and optical measurements. NPL also showcased the ‘Physical Misconception experiment’, the dolls help demonstrate how different the human perception of weight can be from physical measurement. NPL offer a unique range of measurement services, contract research, consultancy and training services. National Instruments exhibited at Culham for the 7th year running. “The exhibition was a great opportunity for us to show off our new X-Series data acquisition products as well as the latest developments in PXI Express instruments for high speed digitisation. We also had a lot of interest in our Compact RIO systems for embedded control and data acquisition and we were fascinated, as usual, by the diversity of applications for which CCFE scientists and engineers could see applications for our products. Garlock (GB) Ltd a global manufacturer of High Performance Metallic Seals and Sealing systems for UHV and Cryogenics, recently exhibited a variety of Seals and Quick Disconnect Collars for Remote Handling at Culham. On show was the Helicoflex Seal which has a temperature range of -272 to 800 degree C, and can be produced in a variety of materials: Aluminium, Silver, Copper etc and circular and shaped seals can also be manufactured. The Quick Disconnect Collars are manufactured for standard ISO Flanges + bespoke designs for remote handling. “We were delighted with the response, and it’s been a great opportunity to promote our sealing capabilities” commented Bill Savage Garlock’s Product Manager. Nor-Cal UK have been regular exhibitors at Culham, showing some examples of their wide range of high and ultra high vacuum components. “We had an excellent day catching up with old contacts but also meeting some new ones. We have been a supplier to the site for many years, but have found the one day exhibition to be the most effective way of showing the maximum amount of people who you are, and what you can do. HMD SEALLESS PUMPS - 18TH MARCH 2010
 

HMD Exhibition
A new company to exhibit in the foyer was HMD who demonstrated their pump range. HMD manufacture zero leakage centrifugal pumps for the chemical, refinery and nuclear industries. By their very nature sealless pumps are safer as there are no fugitive emissions. As the design of the pump is extremely simple there are huge cost benefits when it comes to maintenance. HMD have over 100,000 pump units in operation around the world on over 14,000 different applications. “It was also really good to meet the people that work with the HMD sealless pumps on the JET machine” said Richard Frost. A regular exhibitor to Culham is Pulse Power and Measurement Ltd. On show were a variety of high voltage and high power components and systems.
