Fusion - Focusing on Photonics Companies

Laser and optics systems are crucial elements in plasma diagnostics systems used on MAST and JET and those planned for ITER. The search for UK companies able to supply the high specification components for these systems has led to UKAEA Culham becoming a member of the Photonics Cluster (UK). The cluster is a specialist network dedicated to promoting the adoption of optoelectronics technology and working with UK companies in this area. Representatives from the Photonics Cluster recently visited Culham to introduce the Clusters capabilities and learn about the technical issues faced by fusion scientists in developing plasma diagnostic systems.

A Photonics Cluster meeting

Dr Alex Clarke, Technology Translator, Photonics Cluster http://www.photonicscluster-uk.org/, introduced the aims and scope of the Cluster and the benefits of membership. Of particular interest to the UKAEA engineers was the range of dedicated photonics development facilities and laboratory equipment at the Cluster's Aston University headquarters. With the current project to develop a Thomson scattering plasma diagnostics system for ITER, topics such as optical systems design and light sources capable of working in a high radiation environment were discussed.

“Membership of the Photonics Cluster will greatly assist us with a number of laser and optics projects through access to specialist test equipment and know-how. The next stage is for us to identify a specific project requirement,” said, Mike Walsh, from UKAEA Culham.
