Many companies were Culham T&I regulars, taking the opportunity to meet with their contacts. One such was Lambda Photometrics. This was its third year exhibiting at Culham. Established in 1977, the company is a distributor of lasers and scientific instrumentation. “In the past we've supplied YAG lasers to JET for the high resolution Thomson Scattering system. This year, in addition to lasers, we're showing our expanded range of measurement instrumentation from Stanford Research Systems which is proving to be very popular as scientists look to enhance their experimental capabilities” said Matthew Ball, Photonics Group Manager, Lambda Photometrics.
Precision engineering company Duckworth and Kent was also making a return visit. Stuart Gleeson, Sales Director, commented, “The Culham show is ideal for companies such as ourselves who are willing to undertake challenging bespoke projects. Our most recent project was to modify the remote handling arm on JET to enable a camera to be added.” The engineering company also works for science laboratory projects at Rutherford Appleton and AWE. “We've found that working on these types of projects has increased our skills level in the quality of our work and our ability to handle difficult materials.”
New to Culham T&I was Santon Switchgear Ltd. Based in Newport, South Wales, Santon Switchgear Ltd specialises in switch technology and many customer-specific projects in the field of electro-mechanical switchgear. The company has supplied ATEX Zone 1 and 2 isolators at Culham and Dounreay; and is interested in opportunities within the MAST and JET projects. “We made some good contacts during the Culham exhibition and look forward to exploring opportunities connected to the MAST upgrade,” said Southern Area Sales Manager, Mark Jones.
Derek Stork, Director of Technology at the Culham Centre for Fusion Energy, sees the T&I Exhibition as a good way for scientists and engineers across the site to review the latest engineering technology developments without having to leave the Culham site. “The Technology and Innovation exhibition gives us the opportunity to catch up with developments among our existing suppliers, as well as introducing us to new companies and technologies.”
New Exhibition format boosts Visitor Attendance
The format of this year's exhibition was changed to allow scientists and engineers to visit earlier and so avoid the lunchtime rush, as NuTech Associates Director Lisa Jones-Taylor, who organised the exhibition explained. “The new format worked very well with a record visitor attendance. Introducing the new format we entered each visitor's name in the draw to win an iPod Nano. And the winner was …... Barry Whitehead in CCFE Engineering Department."
Barry commented, “I am delighted to have won the iPod Nano. The Culham T&I exhibitions are always interesting. This year the Weidmuller stand gave us some good information about a specific product - something we would never have thought of had we not met them at the exhibition – and which we are likely to include in our forthcoming MAST NBI project.”
