    UKAEA is playing a key role in a pan-European team developing elements of the ITER Neutral Beam Injection System. 18 months into the project, the team is approaching conclusion of the concept design phase in preparation for beginning work on development of the neutral beam components.

    The ITER Council – the project’s governing body – held its latest meeting on 17-18 June 2008 in Japan. The Council approved the extensive design review undertaken by the ITER team, formalising the start date of operations at 2018, whilst recognising the significant progress that has been made in site preparation and building the project team.

    In 2006, UKAEA was asked to take the lead in researching the design of the LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) Thomson scattering system for ITER. A LIDAR development cluster comprising scientists and engineers from fusion laboratories across Europe was formed.
  • Jacobs Engineering UK Limited wins big ITER contract

    Jacobs Engineering UK Limited has won a contract to provide preliminary architectural and engineering services to the ITER Organisation. The 12-month contract is worth 6.5 million Euro and is the biggest contract placed so far by the ITER Organisation.

    Mike Loughlin is a Nuclear Analysis Co-ordinator with the ITER team in Cadarache, France. He is part of the ITER design team responsible for nuclear analysis of those elements which may impact on the overall performance of the fusion reactor.
