ITER diagnostics update

In 2006, UKAEA was asked to take the lead in researching the design of the LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) Thomson scattering system for ITER. A LIDAR development cluster comprising scientists and engineers from fusion laboratories across Europe was formed.

JET and MAST update

Jacobs Engineering UK Limited wins big ITER contract

Jacobs Engineering UK Limited has won a contract to provide preliminary architectural and engineering services to the ITER Organisation. The 12-month contract is worth 6.5 million Euro and is the biggest contract placed so far by the ITER Organisation.

JET Neutral Beam Enhancement contract for HVR International

HVR International Limited, a world leader in the manufacture of ceramic carbon, high voltage, high energy non inductive resistors, is supplying minimum current resistor units to JET as part of the Neutral Beam Enhancement (NBE) Project, via an EU Public Procurement contract worth 225,000 Euro.

Scientist Profile – Dr Glenn Counsell, Head of Diagnostic Group, Fusion for Energy

Appointed in March 2008, Dr Glenn Counsell is Head of the Diagnostic Group at Fusion for Energy, the Barcelona-based agency overseeing European contributions to ITER, which are over one third of the total. His team is responsible for coordinating European efforts on the R&D, design and procurement of around 25% of the ITER diagnostics.

INDUSTRIAL OPPORTUNITIES IN BILLION-EURO E-ELT CONSTRUCTION

The European Southern Observatory (ESO), an intergovernmental research and development organisation of which the UK is a member, is currently preparing for the construction of a major new telescope facility, the European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT). The 800 million Euro construction phase will provide major opportunities for UK companies.

Technology and Innovation Exhibition 2008

This year marked the 7th annual Technology and Innovation Exhibition at Culham. Bringing together 32 engineering and high technology companies in a single venue, the event is always popular among UKAEA Culham fusion scientists and engineers, and procurement staff, as well as the growing number of technology companies at the Centre.

Engineer Profile - Mike Loughlin, ITER Nuclear Analyst

Mike Loughlin is a Nuclear Analysis Co-ordinator with the ITER team in Cadarache, France. He is part of the ITER design team responsible for nuclear analysis of those elements which may impact on the overall performance of the fusion reactor.

Testing time for NMR machines

Characterising the quality of the magnetic field of a NMR (nuclear magnetic resonance) machine, and related Magnetic Resonance Imaging, is a complex and often expensive process. Not for much longer, however, if the NMR test equipment being developed by AMR Ltd, with the assistance of UKAEA's technical support package, is successful.

F4E database opens for business - Register NOW!

Europe’s Industrial Database for ITER has been moved from EFDA’s website (www.efda.org/eidi/) to Fusion for Energy’s website (http://eidi.f4e.europa.eu/). UK companies not previously registered on this EFDA database should register NOW at F4E!

Trade mission to F4E

In March, the British Consulate in Barcelona, in conjunction with UK Trade and Investment (UKTI) and UKAEA, organised a trade mission to meet the Director, Dr. Didier Gambier, and other senior staff of F4E, Europe's ITER procurement office. The main aims were to understand how F4E is planning to procure Europe’s in-kind contributions to ITER and to give a flavour of the expertise that UK companies can offer. Both aims were fully met.

ISIS Instruments takes advantage of Technical Support Package

Culham Innovation Centre-based ISIS Instruments Ltd is designing the next generation of Vacuum Ultraviolet Monochromators for surface analysis systems that will provide insights into the properties of matter for applications in nanotechnology and information technology, drawing on the skills and expertise in bonding and materials techniques available through the UKAEA Technical Support Package.

Oxford Technologies gets to grips with ITER remote handling

Remote handling company Oxford Technologies Ltd is one of the first companies to have won business with the main ITER Organisation. It has been contracted to create a guide for specification, organisation and management of the future ITER remote handling facilities. A further, recently completed, contract was for an EFDA-funded study of the remote handling requirements of the ITER neutral beam facility.

DAHER LCN wins JET precision engineering contract

Dorset-based precision engineer and fabricator, DAHER LCN, has won a JET work package worth around 980,000 Euro to supply machining, sheet metalwork and coded welding of poloidal and toroidal conduits in Inconel and stainless steel, for assembly and fitting to a large jig supplied by EFDA and made by Morson Projects.

Europe launches its first procurement for ITER

Fusion for Energy (F4E), the organisation responsible for Europe’s contributions to ITER, has announced its first procurement. The procurement is for supply of chromium-plated copper strand that forms part of the ITER superconducting magnets.
